Just got your latest e newsletter and couldn't help but notice that there wee no MI gigs listed. We have several nice venues here in the beautiful north west part of the state (Union Street, Inside/Out Art Gallery, the City Opera House, Kejara's Bridge ...) In the past few months we have had Greg Brown, Vance Gilbert and Harry Manx (just to name a few) here in our little piece of paradice. I think a visit from Mr. John Smith would be just lovely. Anyway, I enjoy your updates. The wife and I just did Ireland with her oldest and his wife last year and I share your appreciation of that little emerald jewell as well. Just sorta thinking out loud. I also just wanted to say a very public thank you for your Songwriting From The Heart workshop at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur Ca. I learned more about songwriting(and myself,I might add)in one week than I had over all the years I have been writing. I truly hope Esalen continues to offer your program for those countless other frustrated songwriters out there seeking a guide who can skillfully lead them through the process while coxing the muse out of wherever she may be hiding(otter dens?)at the moment! Hope to see you on the road this year, John. Take care of yourself. Strange - the last time I had such a strong reaction to a concert was Ferron at Folk City in 1983. Seems like the real thing slips away so easily in our crazy world. And in athe presence of it again, I can't help but weep. I was a singer songwriter for many years, heart, body and soul, and eventually moved into writing because of how gut-wrenching it was to bare my soul so openly, so often. You, however dear fellow Irishman, shine your heart so brightly, openly and freely that it makes me feel like singing again. Last night was a beautiful, beautiful performance that I will always remember and I thank you for the perseverance, courage and heart it takes to sing your life, meal to meal. It was a gift and an honor to be there. And the venue! What heart, inspiration and pure soul I felt in that building. When Steve spoke, I again felt like weeping. There was magic in the air -- and that magic was as simple, loving and precious as the love I feel for my children. It was primal; taking me to a place I long to be more often in my frenetic existence, reminding me of my own humanity and heart. Keep on keepin' on, John. I was inspired. Love, Diane -Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 18:11:02 (EST) Caryl Say Moab, UT USA * I thought you found me?? * I volunteered at the Moab Folk Festival & met you in the Merchandise booth. He is also a singer/song writer and is very interested in finding one like it. In hopes that he gets side-tracked in the next couple of months, I'm hoping to surprise him with one at Christmas. Can I ask what brand, and where you might have found the capo he described? Any help would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you for your music, and for the heart-felt words that go along with it. I was not there! My youngest daughter was in her last equestrian show for the season and I needed to be with her. My first workshop that day at the Festival wasn't until later that afternoon so I missed you all together. We had had a few minutes to talk the evening before. The gentle supportive words you offered when I talked with you about the sudden recent death of my husband were comforting. I understand that the song's words offered then on that Sunday morning were meant to encourage me some more. Thank you so very much. I'd love to purchase a CD with the song you sang but I only know ( words from a friend at the Festival) that it contained phrases like: I will fly across the valleys. John, your website is very impressive! Ireland is a country, too, that draws me. My travel experience is limited to some forays into the States and then to Israel, the Czech Republic and Hungary - all about some volunteer work I do with young teens. Anyway, Ireland might be a trip I will do sometime as I find my way along alone on this journey without Gerry. All the very best to you as you continue touching souls with your music and your sincere, compassionate manner. I feel very lucky to have had a chance to meet you. Dittmer tularosa, nm USA * I thought you found me?? * Hi John, Went to a folk festival in Albuquerque last weekend with friends SKY and John (coordinators of the Alamogordo Area House Concerts) and saw Jonathan Edwards. For some reason, he made me think of you and I decided to check on what you are up to. It looks like I'm a couple of CD's behind!! Congrats on your full schedule. You have always been a favorite of ours since Ed and I first heard you at Kerrville in 1998. I hope you will find your way down to Southern NM again. The good thing is that there are some thriving house concert series in Albuquerque and Las Cruces. SKY could probably hook you up with the others if you decided to come down here. Your Ireland tours look great, too! I might have told you that we lived in England for 3 years when Ed was in the USAF. We loved it over there and travelled as much as we could. We talk of going back, but no firm plans. I was diagnosed with a chronic form of leukemia in September 2005, and I have no idea why I'm telling you this. I'm doing great; it has made me look at life a little differently and definitely in a good way. We are anticipating the birth of our 2nd grandchild in September. All is definitely well. My daughter, Linda, and I were visiting for the first time. I mentioned that your song "Cold, Cold Ground," really touched my heart since my brother passed away earlier this year. I started a little song about my daughter and my visit to Kerrville. One part went, "John Smith sang of my brother, Put him down in that cold, cold ground. Me thinks I saw my brother, Somewhere in that rocking crowd." The festival has motivated me focus less on classical guitar and go back to the folk I used to play as a teenager. Thanks for the mp3 songs you put on your web site. I am going to put a to your site from my littel music page. I wanted to thank you for a great concert. It was the first time I had seen you but not the last. I was so impressed I bought all 5 CD's. I have not stopped listening to them since I left the concert. I was a part time musician/writer for many years but stopped performing about 2 years ago. After your concert I was inspired to start writing and playing again. Although I am not in your caliber I have once again found the serenety in making music. Thank you again for bringing this peaceful feeling back into my life. I hope to see you again the next time you are in Delaware. Good luck and travel safely. -Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 09:55:38 (EDT) Kathleen Pensacola, FL USA * Blind Luck I Guess * Wow.
